  • Wrap Exposed Motors: If the equipment pad sits in a low-lying zone prone to standing water or canal overflow, wrap pump motors securely in heavy-duty waterproof tarps secured with bungee cords, or disconnect the motor entirely and store it indoors.
  • Store Loose Patio Furniture: Never throw patio chairs, umbrellas, or tables into the swimming pool. Metal frames corrode, while sharp fiberglass corners can gouge plaster and tear vinyl liners under wind-churned water. Store all outdoor items inside a garage or screened lanai.
  • Preemptive Shock Treatment: Dose the pool with a double ration of liquid chlorine and concentrated algaecide 24 hours before the storm hits. With power outages frequently lasting days, this chemical barrier prevents green algae from blooming while circulation is offline.

Post-Storm Recovery Protocol

Once local authorities confirm that conditions are safe, survey the equipment pad before restoring power. If the pump motor was submerged under standing water, do not flip the breaker back on; doing so will short the stator windings and ruin the unit. Allow the motor to dry completely, or have a certified route technician inspect the internal insulation with an ohmmeter. Skim out large palm fronds and branches manually with a rake or net before running filtration to keep skimmer lines free from blockages.
